An apprenticeship is a job with substantial training and the development of transferable skills. It is a way for people to earn while they learn, gaining a real qualification, with a real future. You must be employed to carry out apprenticeship training.
Who can be an apprentice?
The Laboratory Technician Level 3 standard is suitable for both existing laboratory staff with no formal dental technician training and new recruits to the industry. It covers:
- Digital design and manufacturing
- Anatomy, materials science, and science
- Conventional manufacturing
- Professionalism, regulation, and safe working practices
- Design and manufacture of devices safe for patients
- Communication within a dental team.
Why apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are employer-led training programmes that combine workplace training with college support to provide apprentices with the relevant knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to progress in their chosen industry. Your apprentice will complete a Level 3 laboratory technician apprenticeship certificate while working 4 days a week in your dental laboratory and on completion, will be eligible to progress to the level 5 dental technician apprenticeship. (Registerable Qualification with GDC)
How are apprenticeships delivered?
Currently, the Dental Technology course is delivered from the Yeovil College campus in Somerset, using a blended delivery model of face-to-face and remote online sessions. Due to regional demand, the college plan to start a cohort for Laboratory Technician Level 3 at the Ivoclar Training Centre (Leicester) for the 2024-2025 academic year, using the same blended model.
How much time do apprenticeships take?
This qualification is completed on a 'Day Release' model - with content delivered at Yeovil College in addition to Assessing & Progress Reviews in the workplace. Bespoke Models of delivery can also be considered such as block weeks of learning.What are the entry requirements for apprenticeships?
No previous dental technology experience is needed, however, you will need Four GCSEs 3-9 including /or Level 2 Mathematics & English. You will need to have achieved English and Maths to undertake this course-
